At the University of Lagos, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter joined the nationwide demonstration. Kayode Adebayo, a senior member of the union and the institution’s representative, said the protest was necessary to draw attention to the government’s failure to honour agreements dating back to 2009.
“This is simply a protest to remind everyone that the dialogue with the federal government has produced no meaningful results since 2009,” Adebayo said. “We have gone on strike several times, even under the current administration, but nothing has been done to improve the welfare and working conditions of ASUU members.”
The protest, which drew lecturers and staff from multiple campuses, highlighted the frustration within the academic community as they continue to push for improved funding, fair wages, and better facilities in the nation’s universities.
