Carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, the traders said they had complied with all registration requirements, including a payment of N2 million, yet their abattoir at Eleko was declared illegal.
The Ministry’s Veterinary Services Department had earlier issued a final abatement notice, warning that the slaughter slab violated the state’s Meat and Animal Traffic Law of 2003 and could be shut down with the land forfeited.
The traders, however, described the move as coercion, claiming it would destroy their livelihoods and force them into a privately owned market. They appealed to the Speaker of the Assembly and the APC leadership to intervene.
Responding to their concerns, APC Deputy Chairman Moshood Maiyegun assured the protesters that the matter would be given due attention.
