Labour Party Rejects Proposed Salary Hike for Politicians, Urges Focus on Workers’ Welfare

In a statement issued on Friday by its interim National Publicity Secretary, Tony Akeni, the party called the proposal a “misadventure” and urged the commission to reconsider its decision in the interest of the nation.

The party argued that instead of awarding more money to politicians, the focus should be on improving the living standards of ordinary citizens. It stressed that Nigerian workers deserve an upward review of the minimum wage, which currently stands at ₦70,000, rather than watching political leaders benefit further in the face of rising inflation and widespread poverty.

Akeni noted that even foreign nations have shown empathy towards struggling Nigerians through aid and interventions, adding that RMAFC has no justification for turning a blind eye to the suffering of citizens.

“The commission should channel its efforts toward lifting workers and the masses out of poverty, not padding the pockets of those already in power,” he said.
