Landslide in Sudan’s Darfur Kills Over 1,000, Only One Survivor Found

More than one thousand people have died after a massive landslide destroyed the village of Tarseen in the Jebel Marra mountains of Darfur, according to local authorities. Only a single survivor has been found.

The disaster struck on August 31 after several days of heavy rainfall. The Sudan Liberation Movement Army led by Abdelwahid Mohamed Nour said the village, once known for citrus farming, has been completely flattened.

The group, which controls parts of the Jebel Marra region, appealed to the United Nations and international aid organisations for help in recovering bodies and providing emergency relief.

The tragedy comes amid a brutal civil war between Sudan’s army and the Rapid Support Forces, a conflict that has left millions displaced, created widespread famine, and exposed communities to floods and disease outbreaks.
