Speaking as keynote speaker at the 2025 Nigerian Bar Association Conference in Enugu, Malema warned against Africa’s growing dependence on foreign loans, which he described as a “debt trap” that mortgages future generations. He restated his party’s vision of a united continent with one currency, one parliament, and a common military command.
Paying tribute to Nigeria’s role in South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle, Malema urged both nations to move beyond historical solidarity and work together on industrialisation. He condemned xenophobic attacks, calling them a betrayal of African unity, and pressed for freer movement across the continent with visa-free travel and harmonized trade policies.
The firebrand politician also criticized global justice systems for their bias against leaders in the Global South, stressing that Africa must strengthen its own courts and institutions to protect the oppressed.
Earlier, NBA President Afam Osigwe (SAN) urged Nigerians, especially lawyers, to embrace resilience, integrity and bold decision-making to secure the country’s economic future. Drawing lessons from the 1949 Enugu Colliery massacre, he said Nigeria must take tough choices on corruption, infrastructure and technology to drive growth.
Enugu Governor Peter Mbah highlighted reforms in the state’s justice system, including e-filing, virtual hearings and pro bono legal services. The opening ceremony was chaired by the Sultan of Sokoto, Dr Sa’ad Abubakar III.
