Nigerian Innovator Creates Bionic Arms That Look Like Human Skin

Immortal Cosmetic Art, based in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, recently unveiled the Ubokobong Bionic Arm, which uses signals from the brain and muscles to allow movement, just like a natural hand. The arm is designed to look flesh-like, blending seamlessly with the wearer’s skin.

The innovation was inspired by the personal experience of the company’s founder, John Amanam Sunday. His younger brother lost fingers in a fireworks accident six years ago and could not find prosthetics in Nigeria that matched his skin tone. That challenge motivated Amanam, a hyper-realistic prosthetic artist, to begin designing lifelike artificial limbs.

Although mass production has not yet begun, the firm says it has already received orders from within Nigeria and abroad, including the United States, Britain, Australia and Ghana. It is also seeking government and NGO partnerships to make the bionic arms affordable for ordinary Nigerians.

Nigeria has no official figures on amputees using prosthetics, but access remains limited for most people. For many, the Ubokobong Bionic Arm offers a new chance at dignity and independence.
