Applicants in Abuja, Lagos and other cities lamented that the hike has placed an extra burden on families already battling with rising food prices, transport costs and unemployment. For many, the passport is not a luxury but a necessity for work, studies and medical travel abroad.
Civil society groups have described the decision as insensitive, urging the government to reconsider the move. They argue that citizens should not be further squeezed at a time when inflation and currency depreciation are shrinking incomes.
Officials, however, insist the adjustment was necessary to cover production costs and improve service delivery. Despite this, many Nigerians fear the policy will push the dream of obtaining travel documents further out of reach for ordinary people.
