The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) confirmed the mishap, which occurred on August 22. Nineteen passengers were rescued, while three remain missing. NIWA Area Manager, Bala Bello, attributed the accident to negligence, overloading, and disregard for safety rules.
A joint team from NIWA, NEMA, SEMA, and the Red Cross has visited the community, with search and rescue operations still ongoing.
The accident comes just days after another boat capsized on the Sokoto Rima River in Goronyo LGA, where four people died, five were declared missing, and over 40 survived.
