Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa, disclosed this in Abuja on Monday at the launch of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) digital portal and its new strategic vision for the profession. He said the policy is part of ongoing reforms to restore integrity and professionalism in the education sector.
“No teacher will henceforth be engaged without ethics screening and criminal background checks. School owners must also confirm their teachers’ TRCN registration and ethical clearance,” the minister said.
The framework, now integrated into the TRCN digital portal, will allow real-time registration, licensing, and monitoring of teachers. According to Alausa, the system will help curb impersonation, forgery, and the employment of unqualified staff while ensuring that only individuals of good moral standing enter the classroom.
TRCN Registrar, Dr. Ronke Soyombo, added that the digital platform will also enhance lesson planning, provide record checks, and establish teachers’ investigation panels across states. She noted that about 30 per cent of Nigerian children still cannot read or write, stressing the need for urgent improvements in teacher quality.
British High Commission’s Senior Education Adviser, Ian Attfield, pledged continued UK support for Nigeria’s teacher development drive. He expressed optimism that the new framework would inspire teachers and strengthen education standards nationwide.
